Employee Q&A: Bryn Leichty

Meet Bryn Leichty, Senior Interior Designer at The Building People and an integral member of our Real Estate & Workplace Team.

Learn more about Bryn’s background and role below:

What is your professional background?

I have 12 years of experience spanning residential, commercial, and luxury motor coach design.

What is your role at The Building People?

I am a Senior Interior Designer.

Can you tell us about the work you do at The Building People?

I work on the U.S. Patent and Trademarks Office contract. I work with the team on the client’s design and space planning needs. Some days I may walk spaces on campus for site survey and furniture verification. Other days I may be working on CAD drawings to show how a space can be converted to better suit client needs, or updating floor plans in their workplace management system.

What do you like most about working in your role?

I like that I’m never just doing one thing. I enjoy the variety of tasks I work on, knowing that each week will likely be different from the last.

What is a fun fact about you people might not know?

I can never get enough of music and books, (usually fantasy, sci-fi, horror), and I incorporate both into my daily life. If I’m not reading, at book club, or exploring a book store, I’m probably at a concert, pestering friends to listen to my favorite album/playlist of the week, or trying to book a concert cruise.

How do you define success?

To me, success is continuing to learn new things and striving to be a better version of myself than I was the day before. You only fail by giving up, so as long as I push myself to grow towards my goals, I consider myself successful.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I would love to be able to learn languages quickly and fluently. I love traveling and listening to music from all over the world, so it would be nice to communicate and understand more readily.

Do you have a favorite quote that resonates with you?

“Let go of who you think you’re supposed to be; embrace who you are.” – Brené Brown

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

When life gets overwhelming, spend time in nature.

What is the accomplishment you are proudest of to date?

I followed in my grandpa’s footsteps and became an interior designer. I’ve known that’s what I wanted to do since I was in elementary school and saw what he did!

This is from my trip driving up the Oregon Coast to Washington with my best friend! A much needed nature escape.

Meet Remy Remkiewicz, Site Manager at The Building People and an integral member of our Facilities O&M Team.

Learn more about Remy’s background and role below:

What is your professional background?

After spending 15 1/2 years in the US Navy, I jumped right into Project Management with a federal contractor at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Honolulu, HI. I have since worked in various forms of project and facility management with local city and county government as well as the private sector. While living in Hawai’i, I earned my MBA from the University of Hawai’i as well as a Certified Facility Manager certification from IFMA before returning to the mainland. Most recently before TBP, I was Facility Manager for Anheuser-Busch’s Los Angeles Brewery in the San Fernando Valley.

What is your role at The Building People?

Site Manager for NASA’s Neil Armstrong Flight Research Center onboard Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Can you tell us about the work you do at The Building People?

As Site Manager, I oversee a department of approximately 30 staff plus a large number of subcontractors in the daily maintenance, repairs, and upkeep for an 838-acre site, including over 1.3M sq. ft. of building space. We play a critical role in ensuring NASA engineers and test pilots have the resources available to continue critical testing for advancing the agency’s goals both here on Earth and in outer space.

What do you like most about working in your role?

First and foremost, the people I work with make it an absolute joy to show up to the office every morning. Beyond that, knowing that our mission here is what makes it possible for some of the greatest advances in air and space travel. It really gives a great sense of purpose and drive to get the job done and to do it well.

What is a fun fact about you people might not know?

I’ve had a long and storied screen career. I starred in a local mini golf commercial on Catalina Island when I was 13 years old. I’ve popped up in a couple of major motion pictures in the last 20+ years. I had a semi-recurring role on the show, Magnum, P.I. (the new version) while I lived in Hawaii. And I’ve had experience behind the camera as a location manager on several TV shows, commercials, and movies.

How do you define success?

As a Boy Scout, whenever we went camping, we were always told to leave the campsite “better than the way in which you found it.” Slightly different meaning but I truly feel that the same sentiment can be said for success in the workplace. If it’s better than the way I found it, then something is going right. Taking that ideal and applying it as a rolling concept, to be successful means to always be making things better than the way they are right now.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I’ve flown a plane, gotten SCUBA-certified, and gotten my motorcycle license. That was the extent of my life’s learning goals (non-professionally). At this point, I’m just enjoying life as it comes at me, one day at a time.

Do you have a favorite quote that resonates with you?

Two quotes, actually:

1. “Do what you can with what you have where you are.” – President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt

2. “When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.” – Cherokee Proverb

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

When I was brand new to the Navy, I had a Chief tell me, “No one cares more about your career than you do.” I’ve taken those words, first uttered to me 21+ years ago, and applied them two-fold. Firstly, at their face value; striving only for the very best, relying on little to no help in advancing myself both personally and professionally to get where I am today. Secondly, by proving those words so very untrue; taking every chance I’ve had along the way to help those around me to make sure no one is ever left behind.

What is the accomplishment you are proudest of to date?

100% has to be my children. With one in high school and the other about to start high school later this year, they are my anchor. Other than that, running 3 full marathons, about a dozen or so half marathons, and countless 5K’s, 10K’s, and mud runs.

Our whole family are Disney fans–myself, my two children, my fiancée, her four children, and their three spouses!

Meet Daniel Courtney, Strategic Business Development Specialist at The Building People and an integral member of our Growth Team.

Learn more about Daniel’s background and role below:

What is your professional background?

I started my federal contracting career as a business systems analyst working on the Army Corps of Engineers’ real estate (REMIS) and rental facilities (RFMIS) management information systems. From there, I moved to National Defense University, where I helped automate student data analytics products and wrote my first white papers…helping clients quantify the cost of inefficient workflows. Since then, I’ve supported a major IT managed services contract in a NIST 800-171 environment for a 1,300-person tenant and developed analytics products for the Corps’ military construction portfolio.

What is your role at The Building People?

I’m a Strategic Business Development Specialist.

Can you tell us about the work you do at The Building People?

I do all things growth. I develop capture strategies, write RFIs, sources sought, proposals, and white papers. I look for ways to optimize how we work.

What do you like most about working in your role?

The constant problem-solving. Whether it’s writing mission-critical justification papers to help keep contracts alive or finding creative ways to use government APIs to make smarter decisions faster…there’s always something interesting to work on. I’m a tinkerer by nature, and this role gives me plenty to tinker with.

What is a fun fact about you people might not know?

In fifth grade, my head was so big they had to send me to a professional football equipment supplier to get a helmet. Even local high schools and colleges didn’t have one that fit. So yeah…literal big head, but I try not to let it go to my ego.

How do you define success?

Cutting a new government contract…half-joking. Success isn’t just about revenue…it’s also about finding better, faster ways to get work done. But real success? That’s found at home, with your family and the people who matter. That’s what all the work is really for.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Go to space. I’d even take a Katy Perry or Lauren Sanchez-style tourist ride, but being an astronaut would be the dream. There’s still a seven-year-old boy in me who thinks that’s the coolest thing ever.

Do you have a favorite quote that resonates with you?

“If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?” – Cormac McCarthy. It’s a critique of blind adherence to the existing systems and rigid thinking. If it’s broken, don’t follow it…fix it.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

I was told to read “Algorithms to Live By.” Once you realize how much of our world runs on algorithms, you start thinking differently…more from first principles, less from habit. That shift really changed how I approach day-to-day life.

What is the accomplishment you are proudest of to date?

Automating a high-visibility report that used to take hours of manual effort…including from a PhD-level government employee…and streamlining it down to minutes. That report went to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and knowing I made it faster and easier to produce was incredibly rewarding.

Fishing with my daughter and one of our dogs at Lake Anna…best kind of day.

The April 2025 Executive Order, Restoring Common Sense to Federal Office Space Management, is more than a real estate mandate—it’s a directive for smarter government. By removing outdated location requirements, encouraging the consolidation of underused assets, and promoting flexible, mission-aligned decisions, this order gives agencies the green light to modernize and optimize their footprint.

This isn’t just about cost-cutting—it’s about aligning space with strategy. Agencies are now empowered to reduce high-rent leases, relocate operations to more cost-effective federal or suburban facilities, and right-size their real estate portfolios to match mission needs.

Key agency actions should include:

  • Conducting rapid utilization assessments and cost-benefit analyses.
  • Consolidating operations and eliminating redundant leases.
  • Embracing hybrid workplace strategies supported by strategies like our Dynamic Workplace Modeling.
  • Prioritizing underutilized federally owned spaces before signing new leases.

At The Building People, we understand that responding to these executive mandates isn’t just about cutting costs—it’s about building a stronger, more agile government. From real estate strategy and facilities operations to smart building integration and energy planning, our proven solutions help federal leaders unlock value and build a more agile, efficient government; our team stands ready to help you assess, optimize, and transform your real estate and workplace strategies to meet mission needs with confidence.

Making Federal Buildings and Facilities Work Smarter

Under the direction of the 2025 Trump administration, federal agencies face a renewed mandate to cut costs, consolidate space, and boost productivity. With new executive orders emphasizing in-person work, streamlined hiring, and drastic reductions in real estate waste, the opportunity is clear: agencies must modernize or risk falling behind. Let’s break down each of these executive orders to see exactly how they impact agencies and what practical steps can be taken to adapt effectively.

Return to In-Person Work: Everyone Back to the Office

The administration’s return-to-office directive mandates that federal employees resume full-time in-person operations, citing the need to restore collaboration, accountability, and mission execution.

The Challenge

Federal buildings designed for pre-pandemic operations are underutilized, with many facilities at 25% occupancy while still incurring full operational costs. Agencies must rapidly adapt their space to accommodate full capacity without expanding square footage.

Practical Ways Agencies Can Adapt:

  • Real-Time Occupancy Intelligence: Sensor-driven analytics reveal true space usage and enable data-backed reconfiguration.
  • Smart Occupancy Design: Agile workspace designs that align occupancy with mission flow and workforce needs.
  • Integrated Facility Management: Vendor-agnostic smart building systems to ensure peak performance and secure integration.

Streamlining the Federal Hiring Process

The administration is cutting red tape and enforcing merit-based, mission-critical hiring practices. Agencies are now expected to hire faster, staff smarter, and justify resource utilization.

The Challenge:

Agencies face rapid workforce fluctuations and an urgent need to match human capital with evolving mission demands—without wasting space or duplicating resources.

Practical Ways Agencies Can Adapt:

  • Predictive Modeling: Forecast staffing needs and align facility configurations to scale with growth or contraction.
  • Dynamic Office Design: Modular workspaces or flexible seating arrangements that adapt as team sizes fluctuate. A physical space that remains responsive to workforce changes without costly redesigns or disruptions.
  • Talent Optimization & Coaching: Implement behavioral science and strategic coaching to help teams adapt and lead through change.
  • Integrated Support Services: Workforce transformation programs to improve productivity, retention, and mission alignment.

Shrinking the Footprint: Optimizing Federal Real Estate

The administration’s cost-cutting directive includes aggressive mandates to dispose of excess property, eliminate redundant leases, and digitize paper-heavy operations. The newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is charged with enforcing results and delivering measurable savings.

What Does This Mean for Agencies?

Agencies must identify excess space, consolidate operations, and optimize asset performance—with clear data to justify decisions.

Strategies Agencies Can Implement:

  • Smart Portfolio Optimization: Integrate AI, IWMS/CMMS systems, and occupancy data to consolidate underused assets and reduce lease obligations.
  • Energy & Asset Lifecycle Management: Adopt smart building tech that supports predictive maintenance, energy efficiency, and lifecycle tracking.
  • Digital Facilities Strategy: Automate workflows and digitize asset data to help agencies streamline operations and accelerate DOGE compliance.

Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE): Streamlining Operations and Reducing Waste

With the launch of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), federal agencies are under strict orders to cut waste, eliminate redundancies, and prove measurable returns on taxpayer dollars. This initiative isn’t a suggestion—it’s a mandate. Agencies are expected to show clear outcomes through technology-driven, performance-focused strategies.

What Does DOGE Mean for Agencies?

DOGE is tasked with transforming how the federal government operates—not with more bureaucracy, but with modern tools, data-driven leadership, and smart automation. Agencies are now required to take aggressive action to:

  • Identify inefficiencies across real estate and operations
  • Eliminate unnecessary administrative overhead
  • Implement cost-saving innovations that are quantifiable, scalable, and sustainable

How Agencies Can Respond Strategically:

  • Adopt Smart Infrastructure Technology
Deploy AI-powered building systems, IoT sensors, and predictive maintenance to eliminate reactive spending and enable proactive performance. These systems detect inefficiencies in real-time and optimize energy use, workforce flow, and asset reliability.
  • Automate Facility and Asset Management
Manual tracking is no longer acceptable. Agencies must digitize asset inventories, automate maintenance workflows, and move to platform-based facility management to reduce labor burden, cut costs, and improve response times.
  • Use Data to Drive Every Decision
With DOGE demanding simplicity and results, agencies must leverage advanced analytics, IWMS, and space intelligence tools to justify decisions. Real-time data drives everything—from lease termination to workplace redesign and energy use strategy.

What’s Next?

The 2025 administration has made it clear: federal operations must become leaner, faster, and results-driven. The return to in-person work, streamlined hiring, aggressive space consolidation, and the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are not isolated mandates—they form a strategic transformation agenda. Federal agencies are expected to comply—but more importantly, they’re expected to perform.

The Time to Act Is Now

Agencies that take bold, technology-enabled action today will not only stay compliant—they will unlock long-term operational and financial advantage. Here’s how:

  • Occupancy Intelligence & Utilization Analytics: Deploy real-time occupancy sensors and analytics to identify unused space, consolidate strategically, and track compliance at the portfolio level.
  • Agile Workplace Optimization: Use space modeling tools to design adaptive layouts that support full in-person operations while minimizing footprint—no costly expansions required.
  • Automated Facility & Asset Lifecycle Management: Digitize and automate your facilities strategy to reduce overhead, extend asset life, and ensure transparent, data-driven compliance reporting.
  • Smart Energy & Resiliency Solutions
Leverage real-time energy dashboards and predictive analytics to meet sustainability goals while cutting utility spend and increasing operational uptime.

This Isn’t Just a Policy Shift—It’s a Performance Mandate

Agencies that delay risk escalating costs, noncompliance, and operational disruption. Those that move decisively will lead the way to smarter, mission-ready federal workplaces.

Lead the Transformation with The Building People

We don’t just toss out strategy ideas—we execute. At The Building People, we bring:

DOD Faces Urgent Challenges in Managing Underutilized and Excess Facilities

A recent GAO report (GAO-25-106132) highlights persistent inefficiencies in the Department of Defense’s (DOD) real estate portfolio, which consists of over 700,000 facilities valued at $2.2 trillion. Despite periodic reviews aimed at optimizing space utilization, the military services continue to report inconsistent and inaccurate facility data, limiting DOD’s ability to make informed real estate decisions.

Key findings from the GAO report include:

  • Inconsistent Facility Utilization Data: The military services employ varying methods to track facility usage, leading to data inaccuracies that impede informed decision-making.
  • Delays in Demolition & Space Optimization: Funding constraints and shifting mission priorities have resulted in challenges in removing excess infrastructure and optimizing space.
  • Aging & Underutilized Facilities Drive Costs Up: Many buildings remain operational despite poor conditions, high maintenance costs, or outdated functionality – ultimately escalating operational expenses.

The GAO has recommended five actions to improve oversight, including holding military services accountable for reporting accurate data and issuing better risk-management guidance. Without immediate action, DOD risks wasting billions on underutilized assets while lacking space for emerging mission needs.

A Smarter, Data-Driven Approach to Federal Real Estate Management

The challenge is clear: The Federal sector must rethink its approach to facility management.

The solution? Data-driven, scalable modernization strategies that optimize space, energy, and costs—without compromising mission readiness.

With deep expertise in public sector real estate strategy, smart buildings, and operational efficiency, The Building People helps federal agencies and military installations eliminate inefficiencies, optimize assets, and future-proof their facilities through next-generation solutions that directly address the challenges outlined in the GAO report.
