Employee Q&A: Ashley Hyman

Meet Ashley Hyman, Head of Marketing at The Building People and an integral member of our Growth Team.

Learn more about Ashley’s background and role below:

What is your professional background?

I started my career in promotional marketing for a radio station group, where I found my passion for engaging with people. From there, I moved into a small marketing agency before finding my niche in the IWMS space, where I’ve spent the past 15 years leading marketing for technology providers. Along the way, I’ve worked with clients across both the private and public sectors and served on the boards of CoreNet and IFMA chapters, gaining valuable insight into the full lifecycle of the built environment and its challenges and opportunities.

What is your role at The Building People?

I’m the Head of Marketing at The Building People, where I help shape our brand and connect with our audience. My role allows me to blend strategy, creativity, and communication to support our mission and drive engagement across various channels.

Can you tell us about the work you do at The Building People?

As Head of Marketing, I lead initiatives that elevate our brand, drive engagement, and support business growth. Through marketing channels and initiatives like digital marketing, content creation, branding, PR, events, and thought leadership, I ensure our messaging resonates with clients and prospects. I also support internal communications, employee engagement, and our philanthropy program alongside the HR team, helping to foster a strong company culture and community impact.

What do you like most about working in your role?

What I love most about my role is the opportunity to engage with people—whether it’s collaborating with internal teams, connecting with prospects and customers, or simply observing and listening. I enjoy figuring out what makes people tick (and what makes them twitch), which is key to understanding their needs. To me, one of the most important aspects of marketing is the ability to read and truly connect with people.

What is a fun fact about you people might not know?

Live music is my passion. I have seen my favorite band almost 70 times and have probably been to over 1000 concerts in my lifetime! My husband plays slide guitar, so I even get to hear music at home.

How do you define success?

For much of my life, I saw success as striving for perfection—trying to be everything to everyone, all the time. But throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with absolutely amazing leaders who helped me realize that success isn’t just about what you accomplish; it’s about how you feel at the end of the day. It can mean achieving a goal, coming up with a great idea, avoiding burnout, or having more time for family and friends. Ultimately, success is about finding a path that supports both your personal and professional goals and doesn’t strip your happiness.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Scuba diving. I love the water and the silence and peace you can find swimming. I always snorkeled growing up, but never learned to scuba dive.

Do you have a favorite quote that resonates with you?

“Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.”

– The Grateful Dead

This is another reminder to always keep looking – whether for a happy moment or the answer to a burning question. Sometimes you find something you weren’t even looking for!

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

“Do one thing every day that makes you happy.” It’s a simple yet powerful reminder that, no matter how tough the day gets, finding even the smallest moments of joy is essential. And if you can, spread a little happiness to others along the way!

What is the accomplishment you are proudest of to date?

My children, no question. Not only did I physically bring them into the world, but they are amazing. They challenge me beyond anything I ever thought imaginable and then they blow my mind with their wonderful little thoughts, questions, dreams, and even jokes!

My fun-loving family and the coolest kids I know, Adeline (7) and Theo (4).
